In 2019, Crescera Capital consolidated portfolio companies NRE, Medcel and Uniceplac into Afya Educacional, a medical education group that provides personalized learning to students across major Brazilian cities as well as remote areas.

“Brazil’s problem is not that it lacks a sufficient number of doctors; it is one of distribution. We have more doctors in São Paulo per 1,000 occupants than in Switzerland, but very few in places like Amazonia. Crescera and Afya are striving to attract a range of health care professionals to more rural areas—and hopefully many will stay once they graduate, thus bringing value to the local communities.”

Afya became the first Brazilian company focused on medical education to be listed on the US Nasdaq Stock Market in 2019, raising over USD264 million and marking the first medical education company to trade on the exchange globally.
