Implementing Effective ESG Practices training will cover how firms are working toward effective and efficient ESG measurement of their portfolio companies, and discuss how to communicate these figures to LPs. Sessions will delve into what ESG information can be collected and consolidated, how GPs can work to design systems that will meet future demands and how to resource and staff an effective ESG function.


Session 1:  Consolidating and Communicating ESG Information

60 Minutes- Presentation and Q&A

In this session, practitioner faculty will provide a framework for how firms can effectively communicate ESG efforts and successes to LPs, and, as a result, deepen and strengthen their LP relationships. Practitioner faculty will address recent trends and reporting on areas including supply chain, gender, and climate, and provide practical tips on how GPs and fund managers can advantageously get in front of sustainability and social market shifts in order to continue to meet LP’s evolving ESG expectations.

Session 2:  Designing and Resourcing an Effective ESG Reporting Structure

90 Minutes- Presentation and Q&A

This session will discuss how GPs can design and refine their ESG data collection in the context of evolving industry standards, portfolio company resources, efficiency trade-offs, and investment requirements. Practitioners will discuss how different internal and external staffing and resources can be leveraged to obtain ESG data,where technology may fit in, and which considerations should contribute to GPs’decision-making processes when building an ESG oversight and reporting system.


Practitioner Faculty:

Dr. Bettina Boekle
Senior Sustainability Manager, DEG Invest

Dr. Bettina Boekle is a Senior Sustainability Manager with DEG Invest, part of the German KfW group where she manages an ESG-portfolio with banks and funds in Latin America, as well as with high social-risk social clients in Asia. Prior to joining DEG in August 2020, Bettina was a senior gender consultant with the global safeguards department of the IFC in Washington, DC, as well as in Accra/Ghana. As part of her IFC assignment in Ghana, Bettina carried out gender and GBV screening of IFC’s fragile-conflict-state portfolio in West Africa including Mali, Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. Bettina has an extensive working experience on social impact and safeguards in Latina America and the Caribbean via her previous assignment as social sustainability specialist at the Inter-American Development Bank in Washington, DC.

Bettina holds a PhD and a Master’s Degree in Political Science from the Free University of Berlin, as well as a MA in Int’l. Relations/Economics from the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, DC. She enjoys teaching MA students at Johns Hopkins University, as well as giving back to local communities via teaching pro-bono yoga classes as certified instructor.

Michael Octoman
Senior Partner and Chief Operating Officer, Navis Capital

Michael Octoman joined Navis in 2000. The bulk of his time is spent managing the investment committee decision-making process, overseeing the Portfolio Operations group, the systematic portfolio company deep dives, and ESG at the Portfolio Company level. He continues to selectively originate transactions and work with companies with a primary focus on Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

Prior to joining Navis, Mr. Octoman worked with Price Waterhouse Coopers with a focus on capital market transaction and financial due diligence, specializing in energy, telecommunications and manufacturing. Mr. Octoman also worked for KPMG in Australia and Canada in Business Advisory services. Mr. Octoman is a lifetime resident of Australasia, having been raised and educated in Australia. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accountancy from the University of South Australia and is an Australian qualified Chartered Accountant.

 

Sanjay Gujral

Chief Business Officer, The Everstone Group

Sanjay Gujral is the Chief Business Officer of the Everstone Group. He rejoined Everstone in 2018, after spending 7 years at L Catterton, where he was Regional Managing Director and part of the leadership team and investment committee for their Asian private equity business. Prior to that, he started his investing career at Everstone in 2006 and was an Executive Director in the private equity team.

Before moving to the buy-side, Sanjay spent 11 years in corporate finance advisory at Arthur Andersen, Ernst & Young and Ambit Corporate Finance. Sanjay is an alumnus of Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi University, and completed his MBA from Indian Institute of Management Bangalore.

Hoda Abou-Jamra
Founding Partner and Asia Managing Director,  TVM Capital Healthcare

Hoda Abou-Jamra is the Founding Partner and Asia Managing Director of TVM Capital Healthcare. She currently leads the firm’s Southeast Asia operations based in Singapore. In 2007, Hoda was the driving force behind the establishment of the TVM Capital Healthcare, using her international expertise to set up a globally active private equity firm with a focus on healthcare in emerging markets. Her experience in business development and fundraising in the U.S. and European pharma and life science markets has helped her to develop one of the region’s most successful private equity firms. Through the exits of their portfolio companies ProVita and CMRC (Cambridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center) , TVM Capital Healthcare has been behind some of the largest healthcare deals in the Middle East in recent years.

Hoda currently holds board positions at Manzil Healthcare Services, a dedicated provider of professional home care and home nursing services headquartered in Abu Dhabi, UAE, and Amecath Medical Technologies, a Medical Devices company with distribution networks in Southeast Asia, Europe and the USA, as well as Bourn Hall International, UAE, the fertility platform of Bourn Hall, UK, focusing on international markets. She is a regular speaker and commentator in the private equity and healthcare arena, and a major advocate of solid corporate governance, ESG investing and promoting diversity and gender equality. Hoda was a founding member of the 30% Club’s MENA chapter, working with multi-sector leaders to achieve even representation of women on boards and in senior level positions.

Hoda graduated from the Bouve College of Health Sciences, Northeastern University in Boston, with a degree in Pharmacy.

Monika Schlesinger

ESG Officer, TVM Capital Healthcare

Monika Schlesinger serves as the TVM Capital Healthcare’s ESG officer since 2017. As such she is acts as U.N. PRI liaison and as internal point of contact for all things ESG, from deal due diligence to exit. She is the point of contact for portfolio when it comes to quarterly and annual ESG reporting on portfolio and fund level.  Monika brings in 20 years of management experience in private equity, venture capital, IT and Life Sciences.

She holds a MBA in Business Administration from the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and a dual citizenship from Germany and the U.S.

Inside Private Capital trainings are designed for GPCA’s global membership. Non-members may apply to register and will be considered on a space-permitting basis. Prospective attendees include fund managers and investment professionals working with portfolio companies and executives with responsibility for fund reporting.
